The optimal application for the two MERCURY subwoofers, the MRW104 and MRW84, lies in bass-reflex or bandpass enclosures. Because the woofers require relatively small volumes, using multiple subwoofers is a viable option. For example, a single MRW84 in a 20-liter bass-reflex enclosure achieves an extremely low cutoff frequency (-3 dB) of 32 Hz! With minimal loss of deep bass, but with even greater dynamics and tight bass response, these subs are also highly recommended for use in small sealed enclosures.
The quality of the MERCURY subwoofers is exceptional: Their perforated steel baskets in the HiFonics design not only make a visual statement, but the choice of components is also impressive: Manufactured paper cones, durable rubber surrounds, and robust spiders are the key features. Even the smaller MRW84, with its 20 cm diameter, boasts a generously sized 50 mm voice coil, just like its larger sibling, the MRW104. Visually, both woofers impress with a chrome-plated basket and magnet boot, making them particularly attractive even in inverted enclosures like the Mercury boxes where the basket is visible.
