Die-hard car audio enthusiasts know: a good subwoofer is essential in a car; otherwise, the whole system just isn’t as enjoyable. However, good subwoofers, due to their basket or cone design, usually have a fairly large mounting depth and often can’t be installed in the desired locations. This problem can now be solved with the HiFonics ZEUS STREET ZST subwoofers, which feature a low-profile design. Thanks to their shallow mounting depths of just 8 or 9 cm, these solutions fit even where conventional subwoofers are simply too deep.
Conventionally designed subwoofers have a deeply shaped cone, which keeps the cone well-defined but unfortunately significantly increases the mounting depth. If you want to reduce the mounting depth, such cones are unsuitable; you have to use shallower versions. However, if these were made from conventional materials like paper or plastic, shallow subwoofers wouldn’t sound good. Therefore, the cones of the ZEUS STREET ZST series are made from an extremely rigid fiberglass/carbon composite. This is the only way to ensure that the air is compressed cleanly at high bass excursions, preventing distortion. Also unusual for this class are the motors with large magnets and 50 mm voice coils, allowing for an X-Max of up to 15 mm (+/-).
The 20 cm ZST8 subwoofer can best realize its potential in a sealed enclosure volume of 10-15 liters, while the ZST10 should be used in enclosures of 15-25 liters or more. Both subwoofers also perform very well in bass-reflex enclosures, which require slightly more volume but deliver even more powerful bass.
