Sundown Audio X-8 v3 (2×2 ohm)

The Sundown X-8, along with all other 8s in our line, is a unique driver within its line-up. Contrary to the design of the other X subwoofers the X-8 is more of an SPL oriented subwoofer. The X-8 suspension design (spider & surround) were designed around creating larger peaks for SPL purposes. It is built on our patented 8Ó subwoofer frame (US Patent D691595) just like the SA-8 v.3 so it shares the same massive mechanical clearances (2.5Ó p-p allowable).

For the X-8 v.2 we removed the vented spacer ring as we did on the SA-8 v.3 and added the same high-velocity vent-holes around the frame base below the spider. This allowed us to reduce the mounting depth a bit to expand installation options. We also added a series of machined channels down the full height of the pole to increase air based cooling and also to reduce audible air velocity though the motor.

The spider is a unique, progressive roll unit two layers thick. This spider was heavily FEA optimized to do the trick job of allowing large excursion capacity with a 2.5Ó coil on an eight inch subwoofer. The surround features a geometry very similar to the ÒSPLÓ cone options on our large woofers in a bit smaller size to suit the excursion capacity of this woofer. Both parts of the suspension support levels of excursion in excess of the linear limits of the motor & coil design.

While the X-8 is more of an SPL optimized woofer it does feature the highest linear x-max of any 8Ó in our line at a full 19mm one-way. It also features a very thick magnet ID shorting ring just like the SA-8 v.3 as well so will enjoy the same benefit of lowered inductive distortion. Make no mistake, the X-8 is still a very clean sounding subwoofer.

If the sound of the SA-8 is too smooth for you Ð meaning you want a more aggressive & punchy sound Ð then the X-8 is the woofer for you. If you want the highest SPL output from any 8Ó woofer in our line Ð then the X-8 is, once again, the woofer for you.
